About Chanticleer GroundKeepers, Inc.: Our Story

Marlin In the early ‘90’s, Marlin was working for a small landscaping company while taking college courses. He showed up to work one day and his boss informed him that the company had gone out of business and he didn’t have any work for him. Not sure what to do, Marlin called his older brother to ask for advice. “Buy a push mower and knock on the doors of all the accounts you used to help service.” Marlin did just that, and Chanticleer GroundKeepers was born. For over 30 years, Marlin and Chanticleer GroundKeepers have provided quality lawn and landscape services to the residents of Greenville, SC.

Marly Marlin Houtz, Jr. (Marly) grew up in the business, working during summer breaks and on weekends. He learned a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and meeting customers’ needs. He also learned about the challenge of running a small business and the flexibility that it can offer. Marly watched his dad leave the house early and often get home late. But his dad still found time for wrestling matches, soccer games, and church events. Marly graduated from Eastside High School, then pursued a business degree earning his B.S. in Business Administration. After working for several years and pursuing several career opportunities, Marly asked Marlin if it was time for him to join Chanticleer GroundKeepers.

Marlin In early 2024, Marly teamed up with Marlin at Chanticleer GroundKeepers. Together they bring a wide variety of strengths. Marlin brings 30+ years of experience running Chanticleer GroundKeepers, decades-long relationships with customers and suppliers, and expertise in how to best develop and maintain his customers’ properties. Marly brings experience in customer service, interpersonal relationships, team growth, and process development.
